These eating disorders can happen at any age, mostly appears between mid-adolescence.
It is not just America that suffers from the craving to be thin. At least 70 million people world wide struggle with an eating disorder. Anorexia Nervosa:
- Lack of/loss of appetite.
- Anorexia affects 1% of American women
- 90-95% of people who suffer from anorexia are females
- One of the highest death rates among any mental health conditions
- Starving oneself can turn into multiple health concerns such as: abnormally slow heart rate and blood pressure, brittle bones, muscle loss and weakness, dehydration (can lead to kidney failure), dry hair and skin, hair loss and even death.
- WARNING SIGNS:
- Intense fear of weight gain or being called "fat"
- Extreme weight loss
- Denial of hunger
- Frequently sees one as being fat, even if underweight
- Excuses to avoid meals/food
- Withdrawal from normal activities
Buliema Nervosa:
- Over eating and making oneself vomit in order to "undo" over eating.
- Buliema affects around 1% to 4% of people within their life lifetime (1-2% in the United States)
- Approximately 80% of people that suffer from Buliema are female
- Some health concerns include: tooth decay from frequently vomiting, unbalanced electrolytes (which causes irregular heart beats, possible heart failure and death), irregular bowel movements and constipation.
- WARNING SIGNS:
- Evidence of binge eating (eating a lot, then vomiting soon afterwards)
- Evidence of purging behaviors (frequently making stops to the bathroom after meals, wrappers of laxatives)
- Unusual swelling of jaw area/cheeks
- Calluses on the back of the hands and knuckles from constant self-vomiting
- Discoloration of teeth
- Withdrawal from normal activities
Over Exercising:
- Exercising often to lose weight can be harmful to your body. Your body needs to rest and re-fuel in order to create changes.
- Too much exercise can lead to health concerns such as: decreased in appetite, fatigue, insomnia (not being able to fall asleep), increased resting heart rate and risk of muscle tear/broken bones.
- WARNING SIGNS:
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Ache/pain in joints and/or muscles
- Decreased in performance- unable to complete workouts due to tiredness and lack of motivation
- Elevated morning pulse
